For immediate release
Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is seeking public feedback as part of a project designed to enhance safety and comfort for road users on Wallace Drive. A series of traffic calming measures, including a lower speed limit, are under consideration.
The Wallace Drive Project focuses on the section of the street north of Willis Point Road and responds to ongoing concerns about road safety, heavy vehicle volumes and pavement deterioration.
The District is proposing the following traffic calming measures:
- the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit;
- addition of bike sharrows;
- removal of the painted centreline;
- installation of 6 to 10 speed tables;
- restriction of bus traffic, and
- two yield points north of Durrance Road (one in each direction) and two yield points south of Durrance Road (one in each direction).
Major changes such as road widening or new walking and biking paths will not be considered due to budget and technical limitations.
Public feedback opportunities
Public input, considered alongside technical, operational, and financial factors, will help staff refine the plan and consider any additional feasible changes.
Upcoming open house

Survey
Can’t make the open house? Residents are invited to provide feedback through a short survey available on saanich.ca/hellowdp until June 12, 2026.
Why are we doing this?
Wallace Drive is a key route connecting Saanich, Central Saanich, and the Highlands. In recent years, resident feedback has indicated that speeding and traffic volume has increased, creating a less accessible roadway for pedestrians and cyclists.
This project supports Saanich’s broader goals for a safe, connected, and sustainable community, as outlined in Active Transportation Plan, Road Safety Action Plan, Speed Limit Establishment and Traffic Calming Policy, Official Community Plan, and Strategic Plan.
