Prior to applying for a permit, please be advised that:
- Residential permits are for single family dwellings, garden suites, accessory buildings, Part 9 townhouses, or houseplexes (SSMUH).
- Commercial, Industrial and Multi-Family permits are for apartments, Part 3 townhouses, multi-use, or non-residential occupancies such as retail.
- To confirm which permit applies, please contact Inspections.
Building Permit Application Review Timelines
For a complete building permit application, the District aims to provide a response within 12 business days for a residential application and 15 days for a commercial application. Review timelines may vary based on:
- Completeness and quality of the application submission
- Project size and complexity
- Required reviews by other District departments
- Current application volumes
The initial response may include comments or information requests from Building Inspection Services, Engineering, Planning, Parks, Fire, or other applicable departments. An initial response does not mean that the building permit is ready to be issued.
To help avoid delays, applicants should ensure all required drawings, documents, forms, and supporting information are included when submitting an application.
