Saanich enhancing environmental protection, seeking experts

June 26, 2020

Saanich is developing an environmental policy framework to help us continue our commitment to protecting the environment.

Saanich already has a number of policies, programs, plans and regulatory tools to protect the natural environment, but in order to be successful, we need an over-arching policy framework to coordinate our efforts and address any gaps.

To help us get there, we are creating a framework, called Resilient Saanich, which will integrate current and future policies ensuring sustainability and environmental protection continues in Saanich.

Three pillars of Resilient Saanich

The proposed Resilient Saanich framework, as directed by Council, will be based on three pillars.

  1. The Biodiversity Conservation strategy;
  2. The Climate Plan, and
  3. Enhanced environmental stewardship.

Who will do the work?

We are creating the Resilient Saanich Technical Committee of experts to advise and support the process. The committee is currently being formed to work with staff and consultants to help shape the Resilient Saanich Environmental Policy Framework.

Committee members will be specialists chosen to advise and share expertise towards the development of Resilient Saanich. The aim is to address current policy gaps and to effectively meet the Official Community Plan vision for the natural environment.
