Upgrades slated for Wilkinson Road

February 1, 2019

For immediate release

Saanich, BC – Starting in late February, the District of Saanich will start to make improvements to Wilkinson Road, between Greenlea Road and Travino Lane.

The main goal of this infrastructure project is to upgrade bike lanes and sidewalks, increasing the level of safety for all users.

This project fills a gap in existing infrastructure and brings us one step forward to fulfilling the recommendations in the Royal Oak Local Area Plan and the Active Transportation Plan.

Construction impacts:

Construction is slated to begin in late February. As with any other project we undertake, Saanich will attempt to mitigate disruption to neighbours and traffic.

During construction, minor traffic delays can be expected; however, Saanich staff will provide updates to directly affected property owners and will use electronic sign boards to divert traffic to other major routes.

Quick facts:
  • The upgrade will complete 80% of the planned walking and cycling facilities on Wilkinson Road.
  • The new facilities will improve connectivity to Quick’s Bottom Park, SIDES, and Royal Oak Middle School.
  • Constructing new bike lanes and sidewalks requires widening of the existing roadway. This widening may have some minor impacts to vegetation and trees on both sides of the road.
  • For every tree that is removed, Saanich will plant two trees within the municipality.
