The Waterworks Section of Public Works delivers clean, safe drinking water to the community and maintains essential water infrastructure. We are seeking two experienced, safety-focused Utility Operator III’s to support the seasonal Flushing Program.
What you will do
As a Utility Operator III, you will coordinate and participate in water-distribution system work, with a primary focus on the seasonal Flushing Program. You will help organize field activities, maintain service and water quality, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards.
You will work on activities such as:
- Watermain flushing and related distribution-system maintenance
- Water-system inspection, testing, sampling, and operational response
- Coordinating daily field work, crew activities, and project priorities
Your impact (key responsibilities)
Crew coordination & safety
- Coordinate and review work to meet schedules and established performance standards
- Promote a safe worksite for crews and the public by applying municipal and WorkSafeBC safety standards
- Liaise with internal and external contacts, and respond to public enquiries and complaints
Water system operations
- Work on the potable-water system using best management practices that protect water quality
- Conduct tests, diagnose malfunctions, complete routine mechanical maintenance, and support repairs to system appurtenances
- Perform cross-connection device testing; collect compliance samples; complete routine analyses; and support watermain pressure testing and chlorination
Records, planning & response
- Maintain complete maintenance and testing records, reports, and electronic documentation
- Read and interpret engineering plans to locate utilities and support project work
- Respond to emergency calls for service and perform other related duties as required

- Waterworks pipefitting and project coordination experience
- Confidence directing the work of others and coordinating field activities
- Strong field-based GIS, plan-reading, troubleshooting, and record-keeping skills

Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent, and EOCP Level I Certification for Wastewater Collection or Water Distribution
- Three years of pipefitting experience in water or wastewater systems, including project-management experience
- Considerable knowledge of field-based GIS software and experience and/or training directing the work of others
- Traffic Control Person Certificate
- A valid Class 3 BC Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement, as required, and annual renewal of a Driver's Abstract
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
