The District of Saanich Youth Services section operates three youth centres within Gordon Head Recreation Centre, Saanich Commonwealth Place, and Pearkes Recreation Centre. Youth Centre staff are responsible for planning and overseeing registered and drop-in programs and services for youth ages 10 to 17 in our community. As a Program Leader I – Youth Centres, you will work cooperatively and communicate effectively with participants, families, coworkers, and supervisors while helping to create safe, inclusive, and engaging recreation opportunities.
The Program Leader I plans, facilitates, and leads recreational activities for youth participants, including activities, games, sports, crafts, and special interest programs. This role is responsible for ensuring the enjoyment and safety of participants by maintaining the program site, implementing safe work practices, leading well-organized activities, responding to participant needs, reporting incidents or operational concerns, supporting program evaluation, providing direction to Program Assistants and volunteers, responding to public inquiries, performing first aid, and participating in leadership training.
Requirements include completion of Grade 10; three months’ experience working with youth in a recreational or instructional setting; demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills; Emergency First Aid and CPR-C; and a satisfactory Police Information Check. The ideal candidates will have the ability to be inclusive and flexible to ensure a positive environment is created for all participants, maintain a high degree of enthusiasm and personal motivation, and support youth with diverse needs and interests. Experience working with youth who have behavioural, cognitive, or diverse abilities is considered an asset. A valid Class 4 Driver’s Licence may be required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
The successful candidates will work varying shifts that may include days, evenings, and weekends. Shift hours and locations vary and depend on program registration. Candidates should be available to work a minimum of two hours per week at any selected location on any day Monday to Sunday. As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted.
