Saanich, BC – Drivers in Saanich now have access to eight new DC Fast Charging (DCFC) ports at the G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre (3100 Tillicum Road), providing convenient, high-speed charging options at this popular community hub.
The new charging site is part of BC Hydro’s public charging network of nearly 800 charging ports across the province.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the charging site when visiting GR Pearkes, or Saanich Centennial Public Library. The chargers are also conveniently located near Tillicum Centre.
Progress towards achieving key targets
Expanding access to faster public EV charging supports Saanich’s Climate Plan and Electric Mobility Strategy by making it easier for residents to choose electric vehicles. Transportation is Saanich’s largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with 38% of emissions (nearly 184,000 tCO2e in 2023) coming from the vehicles that Saanich residents drive.
“Saanich has consistently been a leader in EV adoption; however, we know that access to a reliable charging network is a major consideration and inhibits some households from choosing an electric vehicle”, says Maggie Baynham, District of Saanich Sustainability Project Manager. “We’re excited to support BC Hydro in expanding the local public charging network and hope to see continued growth in EV adoption in the community.”
Since the Capital Regional District released its Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap in 2021, 38 new public Level 2 chargers have been installed in Saanich, but the installation of fast charging has not progressed. These eight new DCFC ports directly address that gap, and improve service availability for the community.
Under the licence agreement with the District of Saanich, BC Hydro will retain ownership and operational responsibility for the chargers.
