For immediate release
Saanich, BC –The District of Saanich is asking residents to complete a survey to help decide which roads should become neighbourhood bikeways, as well as to prioritize the order in which they are built.
Through the Neighbourhood Bikeways Identification and Prioritization Project, Saanich is working towards expanding the network of streets that are safe and accessible for cyclists of all ages and abilities to travel on. This project will grow the long-term bicycle network in the District, which was identified as a priority in the Active Transportation Plan.
What are neighbourhood bikeways?
Neighbourhood bikeways are streets designed to decrease the speed of vehicle traffic and help cyclists safely share the road with cars. They are attractive routes for cyclists of all ages and abilities and often connect existing protected bike routes and trails.
They can include signs and pavement markings, speed humps, traffic circles, diverters, and other features to help make cyclists feel more comfortable. Examples of neighbourhood bikeways that are already in place in Saanich include Braefoot Road, Grange Road and Seaton Street.
What we heard
The first round of public engagement was completed last fall. Participants shared feedback about how the District should decide which routes to make neighbourhood bikeways, as well as what matters most when prioritizing neighbourhood bikeways.
