Moving Saanich Forward project selected for planning award

Saanich, BC – Moving Saanich Forward - Saanich's Active Transportation Plan has been selected for a Planning Institute of BC silver award in the category of excellence in policy planning - city and urban areas.

“We’re thrilled to accept this award for excellence in policy planning,” said Harley Machielse, Director of Engineering. “When we started the project, we knew we wanted to involve the public at as many levels as possible, and because of that our success is shared with the members of the community who helped bring this project to fruition.”

Each year, the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) presents awards for excellence in planning. The 2019 winners were formally presented at the PIBC 2019 annual conference on Wednesday, May 8.

 Project highlights

Through the Moving Saanich Forward project, Saanich worked with the community to develop a vision along with policies and actions to guide the development of safe, attractive and convenient active transportation options for people of all ages and abilities over the next 30 years. This project showcased Saanich’s commitment to improving walking, biking and other active mobility options through the creation of the Active Transportation Plan

Along with help from the Victoria-based consultant Urban Systems, the team took a proactive and creative approach by engaging with the community on multiple levels through open houses, social media, videos and online surveys.
