Saanich Talks speaker series begins next week

January 6, 2017

The public is invited to our upcoming speaker events, Saanich Talks.

We have invited experts to speak on topical issues. We have two Saanich Talks events booked with future events coming later in the year.

Both events run 7 - 9 p.m. and are at Uptown, 3rd floor above Best Buy (access via elevator).

Upcoming Saanich Talks

Saanich Talks #1 (January 11) - Cycling in Saanich

This talk is inspired by our current active transportation plan project, Moving Saanich Forward. We are pleased to host two great speakers who will discuss cycling in Canada.

  • Dr. Kay Teschke of UBC will be speaking about the motivators and health benefits of Canadian cycling, including an overview of recent research out of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC.
  • Brian Patterson of Urban Systems will then speak about the status of cycling in a variety of cities across Canada with a focus on policy and practice.
Saanich Talks #2 (January 19) - A livable urban future

Join us for coffee and dessert as we explore ideas to develop a sustainable community. This talk is an excellent companion to our current Uptown-Douglas Corridor Plan project. We welcome our speakers:

  • Thomas Mueller is the founding director, and President and CEO of the Canada Green Building Council since 2005. He leads the Council's national green building strategy, programs and standards, including LEED.  He will be speaking about the role of green buildings in transitioning to more sustainable communities, and bring real examples from other communities.
  • Michael von Hausen is President of MVH Urban Planning & Design. He is one of Canada's leaders in urban design and planning and will finish the evening with a presentation about the key components for designing a healthy community with an emphasis on urban centres. He will describe eight necessary components for next generation urban design.
