Visible is an invitation to explore what it means to be an older woman who engages with life and the community, through a creative process that requires them to be visible. Older women often find that they are treated as if they are invisible in contemporary society; our group wishes to affirm our visibility through this exhibition and to offer an opportunity for the public to reflect on our community’s collective experience of what it means to be visible. 

About the Artists

At age 87, Phyllis Serota is one of Victoria’s living treasures. She has been a teacher, mentor and inspiration to a myriad of artists in the city of Victoria. Since 1994, Serota has also overseen a tutorial group which meets monthly in her studio. While members of the studio group have changed over the decades, the majority of current members have been part of the group for more than 25 years. The current group includes:  Phyllis Serota, Betsy Tumansonis, Judy Kujundzic, Katherine Farris, Karen Whyte, Linda Lange,  Linda Maasch and Susan Corner.

About the Artists/Artwork

ArtWorks is an artist development program for emerging and established artists. Participants engage in a supported studio environment where they can refine their artistic skills, experiment with different mediums, and exhibit their work.

Artists spend each day working on their art, experimenting with different mediums, and refining their techniques in a professional supported studio setting. The atmosphere is relaxed yet focused, allowing participants to work at their own pace while receiving hands-on support from staff who are skilled, practicing artists. These mentors provide guidance, demonstrations, and constructive feedback to help artists push their creative boundaries and bring their visions to life.  For 2026, the ArtWorks Program will be showcasing a variety of different art in this display case, changing every 8 weeks as part of a partnership with Saanich Community Services and Cedar Hill Recreation Centre.

Hallway Case # 4

Barb MacLeod

About the Artwork / Artist:

Barb MacLeod was born and raised in Toronto where she received her formal art education and started her career. She became well known as a fibre artist through her gallery and commission studio in Toronto. Working with architects and designers, her fibre-art is in public, corporate and private collections in Canada and various international locations. After closing her textile studio in 2008 she began painting in acrylics and mixed media.

Her work reflects her interest in dramatic lighting found in landscapes. She uses a variety of techniques and materials to give the desired effect and continues to experiment with new ones. Her landscapes are often an amalgam of many places and an emotional response to light and its stunning effect.
