Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 7am – 3:30pm

Description of work/program:

Would you like to help grow and care for Saanich’s urban forest?

The Urban Forestry section is currently looking for up to three employees who are interested in a short-term, up to 14-week assignment as PW1’s within Urban Forestry. This is a CUPE position.    

The base job duties and responsibilities of the role, as well as the qualifications are outlined in the attached job description. For the interim, we anticipate the focus areas for the position will be:

  • Safely performs urban forestry activities such as planting, watering, pruning, weeding, general plant health care and integrated pest management for a variety of native and non-native tree species.
  • Performs and documents small tree maintenance work on public lands.
  • Works well alone or with other staff as required.
  • Can work safely around machinery large machinery (backhoes, grinders, chipper, etc.). Operates and performs routine service maintenance on a wide range of manual and motorized tools and equipment pertinent to Parks.
  • Read and follow site plans and underground utility checks for tree planting projects.
  • Lifts and carries materials weighing 20-50kgs.

The ideal candidate will have experience working around trees, accustomed to performing heavy lifting, and thorough knowledge/experience about Saanich’s current Urban Forestry program. They will also have organizational skills, proven ability to read and update Excel Spreadsheets, and good written and verbal communication skills.
