Parks, Recreation and Community Services is aware of local and provincial wildfires and their effect on air quality in Saanich. Staff are monitoring the situation closely for any potential impacts to programs, events or services. Community and staff safety is our first priority.
Saanich is a large, geographically diverse municipality and we recognize that program adaptations necessary in one location may vary from those appropriate in another.
We recommend that patrons and program participants refer to the BC Air Quality Health Index, follow established guidance, and modify their activities based on individual needs.
Day camps for children and youth
Many Saanich day camps operate primarily or entirely outdoors, taking advantage of the District’s 170+ parks and community spaces.
-
Program leaders follow strict guidelines from our Occupational Health and Safety office to ensure the safety of staff and participants. If the BC Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) increases, staff will:
-
Adapt programs to include lower-intensity or seated activities to reduce running and air intake
-
Provide more frequent breaks.
-
In the event that AQHI indicates a risk for staff and campers working and playing outside, outdoor camps will be moved indoors or canceled.
-
If your child is sensitive to the change in air quality, please inform camp staff, send your child to camp with a mask, or keep them home if you feel more comfortable. Resources provided by Island Health are available here.
-
Guardians are reminded to notify staff of their children’s preexisting medical conditions and individual needs.
-
If your child has asthma or other chronic illness, identify and make any rescue (fast-acting) medications available to staff.
-
We recognize the important role that day camps play as childcare for families, and cancellations will be a last resort.
-
Check this webpage for updates. Specific information regarding day camp cancelations or changes to program locations will be communicated via email.
