Quadra McKenzie Plan receives final approval

Saanich, BC – The Quadra McKenzie Plan (QMP) has been adopted by Saanich Council, establishing a long-term framework for how this important area will grow and change over the next 20 years and beyond.

The Plan reflects nearly three years of planning, technical analysis, public engagement and Council deliberation. Throughout the process, the QMP was refined in response to community feedback to help balance growth with livability, transportation choices, public realm improvements and environmental sustainability.

“This process showed just how much Saanich residents care about the future of their community, and I want to acknowledge their meaningful input and how it helped shape this final plan,” says Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock. “The QMP gives us a strong foundation for the future of the Quadra McKenzie area and helps ensure that as change happens over time, it supports new homes, better transportation options and vibrant places for people to live, work, shop and connect.”

In addition to previous refinements, Council recently added an amendment to strengthen the Plan’s environmental direction, with a new goal focused on protecting and restoring ecosystems and supporting biodiversity. It also includes a policy to work with Indigenous communities to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into Garry Oak restoration, monitoring, and culturally appropriate interpretation and education within parks and along trails.

While the Plan sets a clear direction for the future, change will not happen overnight. It is intended to provide vision and guidance over the next 20+ years, helping ensure growth happens in a coordinated, thoughtful way as the area evolves.

By planning ahead, Saanich can better support future housing and employment growth in well-designed urban areas, while improving connections between neighbourhoods and helping to ensure residents can benefit from more services and amenities close to home.
