Next Generation 9-1-1: modernizing emergency communications in the region
October 13, 2026
Information Bulletin
For immediate release
Saanich, BC - The District of Saanich is pleased to announce its transition to the Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) system. In partnership with E-Comm 9-1-1, Saanich is advancing emergency communications through this essential modernization initiative to better serve our community through this technological upgrade.
For the public, the transition to NG9‑1‑1 will occur entirely behind the scenes. Residents will continue to dial 9‑1‑1 the same way they do today and will connect with emergency call takers as usual.
What’s Changing?
NG9-1-1 replaces the older 9-1-1 network with a secure digital system designed with backup systems in place.
The new system also creates a foundation for future capabilities, which may include sharing text, photos or video with 9-1-1 to assist responders in assessing and responding more effectively. These features will not be available immediately and residents should continue to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
The legacy 9-1-1 network will be decommissioned on March 31, 2027.
New callback for disconnected 9-1-1 calls
The only immediate public‑facing change will be the introduction of a new automated callback system for quickly abandoned 9‑1‑1 calls. This technology automatically calls back individuals who disconnect before reaching a call taker, helping ensure they can reconnect if they need help while allowing call takers to remain focused on active emergencies.
If you call 9-1-1 by mistake, stay on the line and let the call taker know. This helps ensure emergency resources are available for people who need them.
Supporting emergency communications across the region
NG9-1-1 will strengthen the reliability and resilience of emergency communications in Saanich and prepare the region for future 9-1-1 service improvements.
Saanich Fire provides complete fire call‑taking and dispatch services for 17 client fire departments, supporting more than 200,000 residents across the Capital Region. Planning and financial support for acquiring and setting up the necessary equipment for NG9-1-1 was provided by E-Comm 9-1-1 and the Province of B.C.
