From Grade 4 student to Mayor for the Morning!

February 24, 2026

Saanich, BC – Ten-year-old Oskar Williams took on the role of the District’s Mayor earlier this month, while Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock stepped aside into the role of Mayor’s Assistant. Oskar earned the honour of serving as Mayor for the Morning after winning Mayor and Council’s holiday card contest late last year.

Oskar had a first-hand look at the busy life of a mayor, starting with creating a ‘chain of office’ out of Froot Loops while having important discussions at Municipal Hall. Once Oskar and Mayor Murdock got acquainted, they had a full day ahead, including:

  • Visiting Curby, the District’s mini street sweeper, to learn how Public Works staff keep protected bike lanes clear;
  • Learning the ropes of a Council meeting in Council Chambers;
  • Checking in with the District’s Finance Department and meeting various staff;
  • Touring the Saanich Police and Fire Stations and of course checking out their vehicles!

Oskar shared a number progressive ideas he would like to implement, including bringing outdoor swimming pools to Saanich, eating ice cream sundaes every Sunday, and four-day work weeks.

At the end of the day, Oskar was presented with the colourful “Sour Key to the District.”

“Oskar and his family were a pleasure to have at Municipal Hall. He brought many thoughtful ideas, questions, and a cheerful spirit that will serve him well in his future endeavors. Combined with his artistic talent that was featured on our holiday card this past season, Oskar would be a great candidate for a future Saanich Mayor!” said Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock.
