Information Bulletin
For immediate release
Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is seeking residents who live in multi-unit buildings who are willing to participate in research into indoor overheating and summer comfort in multi‑unit residential buildings across Saanich and the Capital Regional District (CRD).
As summers become warmer, many households experience uncomfortable indoor temperatures—particularly in multi‑unit buildings where cooling options can be limited. This project will help build a clearer regional picture of indoor conditions and support future planning and responses.
How the research works
Residents who live in apartments or condos are invited to participate by hosting a sensor in their home from May to September. The sensor will measure:
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Potentially other Indoor air quality indicators
Sensors will automatically transmit data to a central database, where it will be aggregated and analyzed to understand indoor conditions during the warmer months. No manual tracking is required. All the sensors will be returned to the District of Saanich at the end.
Timeline to apply
Saanich is aiming to have sensors installed by the end of April 2026, ahead of the monitoring period.
How to participate
If you live in a multi‑unit residential building anywhere in the CRD and are interested in participating, please complete the survey on HelloSaanich (scroll to the bottom of the page and ensure you have an account to complete). If you are a suitable candidate, Saanich staff will reach out with further details. Survey participants will be entered into a draw for gift certificates.
Why participate
Your participation will strengthen the research and support regional efforts to better understand and respond to indoor overheating, helping inform future work on building comfort, health, and climate resilience.
