Information Bulletin
For immediate release

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is taking another step towards prioritizing road safety and community well-being with the development of a traffic calming policy. As part of the process, residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming pop-up engagement events.

The purpose of this policy is to provide direction on the administration and implementation of traffic calming in Saanich. It will outline a process for implementation of traffic calming throughout the District and will focus on improving neighbourhood livability, encouraging active transportation and increasing safety for all road users.

Public engagement

Join us at one of four upcoming sessions (the first one is tonight!) or complete the online survey until May 31, 2025.

  • Tuesday, April 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gordon Head Recreation Centre (4100 Lambrick Way)
  • Sunday, May 4 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the plaza in front of Walmart at Uptown (3460 Saanich Road)
  • Thursday, May 15 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. beside the Lochside Trail at McKenzie Avenue
  • Tuesday, May 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at G. R. Pearkes Recreation Centre (3100 Tillicum Road)

Through this public engagement, staff will gather input from all stakeholders to inform the proposed policy, as well as be available to answer questions and provide clarification.

Next steps

Following the public engagement period, staff will compile public feedback and adjust the draft policy as required. The proposed policy will then be presented to the Committee of the Whole later in 2025.

Background

Saanich Council directed staff to develop this policy in 2022 as part of a broader commitment to creating safe, comfortable, and accessible streets for all users. The updated policy will support actions outlined in Saanich’s 2024 Active Transportation Plan, which calls for a consistent approach to implementing traffic calming measures.

The Road Safety Action Plan, adopted by Council in October 2024, also identifies the development of a traffic calming policy and program as a key action to reduce traffic-related injuries and enhance livability.
