Saanich COVID-19 update: Recreation centres closed effective March 17

Saanich, BC – As of March 17, 2020, programs and drop-in activities at Saanich Commonwealth Place, Pearkes, Gordon Head and Cedar Hill recreation centres have been cancelled until further notice to minimize the risk of transmitting COVID-19.

“As the COVID-19 situation unfolds, we are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and safety of our residents and staff,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “While we know that recreation is a key part of our community, it’s important that we all do our part to mitigate risk and exposure to COVID-19. I encourage you to continue to take advantage of the warmer weather and safely explore Saanich’s parks and natural areas. Let’s work together to stay active and healthy amidst this changing situation.”

Limited services still available

Day camps

Day camps will remain in service until Friday, March 20, pending additional direction from the Province. However, we encourage families to make other child care arrangements and expect that day camps could close at any time.

These programs are an essential service for families who are working during this evolving situation.

The decision to keep these programs operating was done in line with guidance from the BC Centre for Disease Control and the Medical Health Office. We will continue to take our direction from the Province and will advise parents and care givers of any changes as soon as possible.

Essential health services (massage, kinesiology etc.)

We have closed our essential health services at this time.

Golf course

Credits for cancelled programs

Credits will be issued to anyone who has registered for activities affected by these closures. Saanich staff will automatically apply the appropriate credit to your Active Net account. There is no need to contact us to cancel.

Any refund requests will be processed at a later date.

Saanich’s COVID-19 preparation and response

It’s important to note that we are reviewing and adjusting our cleaning protocols. High contact surfaces will receive more frequent cleaning in all municipal facilities.

As the situation unfolds, we will continue to monitor credible sources and will work with our provincial and regional partners.
