Saanich and ICBC to lead road safety review of Prospect Lake Road

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is committed to ensuring roads in rural Saanich are safe for all users. After receiving feedback from the community about the safety on Prospect Lake Road, steps are being taken to address this by partnering with ICBC to complete a road safety review.

“We heard the concerns of the community relating to safety on their roads and are proactively doing a review of the area prior to beginning work on the Prospect Lake Road and Sparton Road improvement project,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “As our community grows, so too does the use of our roads. As Saanich moves forward with the implementation of the Active Transportation Plan, reviews like this will ensure safety is at the forefront of our projects.”

Opportunity for involvement

Public input will be an important piece of this review and we encourage residents who have an interest in this area to share their local knowledge of the road and to identify areas or characteristics of the road that are of concern. More information about the review – including maps of the area which can be used as reference while providing input – is available on saanich.ca/projects.

Feedback can be provided until March 30 by email to engineering@saanich.ca.

As with other technical reviews and reports, we welcome initial feedback from the public and will share the results once complete.

Review details

A third-party contractor will be helping us to complete this work and will make recommendations on appropriate next steps to improve the road.

The safety review will be based on The Canadian Guide to In-Service Road Safety Reviews, developed by Transportation Association of Canada. The intent of this road safety review is to assess the existing roadway conditions, traffic volumes, collision history, geometrics, human factors, observations and traffic conflicts. These factors will be assessed and options to reduce collision risks will be provided. It will then be determined if changes will be required to the priorities in the Active Transportation Plan.

Timeline

The review will begin in early March and public input will be received until March 30. The results of the road safety audit will be released in summer 2020.
