Textured Landscapes

About the Artwork:

Textured Landscapes - Images of trees in west coast landscapes My process demonstrates that art can be accomplished using tiny bits of cotton fabric as the medium. I up-cycle scraps of fabric, keeping them out of the landfill. The result is a lively mix of realism and fantasy. The trees are tree-like in a landscape setting. However, when the viewer takes a closer look, they are loaded with details.

About the Artist:

My inspiration is west coast scenery. I love handling fabric. A lifetime passion of working with textiles inspires my work. The colours and textures help to inform my interpretation of a particular subject. Regularly dying and painting my own fabrics, I can produce unique colours and am able to bring luminescence into my landscape creations. Travelling with my camera in hand, it is from these captured images that I compose my landscapes. I begin with a vague idea and am often surprised with the results. My trees are what I’m known for. I stitch the intricate cedar, fir and arbutus trees regularly featured in my compositions. The use of fabric as a paint pallet creates images that may be slightly familiar with a unique presence. In the quilted composition they become an artistic representation. They invite closer inspection to truly understand the images.

Garth Homer Artworks Program

About the Artwork / Artists:

ArtWorks is an artist development program for emerging and established artists. Participants engage in a supported studio environment where they can refine their artistic skills, experiment with different mediums, and exhibit their work.

Artists spend each day working on their art, experimenting with different mediums, and refining their techniques in a professional supported studio setting. The atmosphere is relaxed yet focused, allowing participants to work at their own pace while receiving hands-on support from staff who are skilled, practicing artists. These mentors provide guidance, demonstrations, and constructive feedback to help artists push their creative boundaries and bring their visions to life.  For 2026, the ArtWorks Program will be showcasing a variety of different art in this display case, in partnership with Saanich Community Services and Cedar Hill Recreation Centre.
