Main Gallery & Cubes – Tanya Bub

Solo Exhibition
Under the Sea

About the Artwork:

Dive beneath the waters of the Salish Sea and encounter its extraordinary marine life in this one-of-a-kind immersive and educational art exhibit. Surround yourself with sculptures of the ocean’s most captivating inhabitants—including the giant Pacific octopus, leatherback turtle, sea otter, jellyfish, orca, salmon, sea lion, porpoise, and more— many crafted from driftwood collected along our local shores.

In partnership with Saanich Community Services and the Georgia Strait Alliance, this exhibit invites you to engage all your senses. Scan QR codes to hear the artist share stories and insights about selected works, listen to sounds of the ocean, explore what it means to be a driftwood artist and deepen your connection to life under the sea.

About the Artist:

Tanya Bub is an eco-artist who creates sculptures of animals and people from found wood and recycled materials. A signature feature of her work is making inanimate objects appear to be so alive that is it almost impossible to resist the feeling that there is a living being present. Her pieces borrow energy from the elements out of which they are comprised, be it the life force in a piece of driftwood whose history and struggles are tangible in its tortuous twists and curves, the text and images from magazine clippings incorporated into her sculptural collages, or recycled plastics that speak of a history or consumption. While addressing serious issues like our interconnection with the environment, her work is whimsical, warm, humorous and highly relatable, evoking joy and even laughter, even in people who are not necessarily moved by conventional artwork.
