The South Island Prosperity Partnership (SIPP), in collaboration with the District of Saanich, has commissioned an in-depth report on Greater Victoria’s life sciences sector, highlighting the region’s potential as an emerging hub for innovation and entrepreneurial growth.
As identified in Saanich’s Economic Development Strategy, life sciences is a key sector poised for continued expansion and an integral part of the community’s economic vision. The report’s findings provide valuable insights to help the District support life sciences entrepreneurs and companies.
The report, conducted by Qatalyst Research Group, offers a comprehensive analysis of the region’s life sciences ecosystem, outlining its strengths, challenges, and opportunities for future growth.
Key Findings:
- Greater Victoria is home to 60+ life sciences companies spanning diverse fields such as medical devices, biotechnology, and digital health.
- Infrastructure developments, including the Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology (CAMTEC) at the University of Victoria (UVic), along with planned wet lab facilities and innovation spaces, are enhancing the region’s ability to support startups and emerging companies.
- The region benefits from proximity to top-tier post-secondary institutions, providing access to cutting-edge research and a skilled talent pipeline that keeps life sciences companies at the forefront of innovation.
The report also highlights key challenges, and several recommendations aimed at overcoming them in support of this high-potential sector.
