Saanich, BC – The Saanich Fire Department and District of Saanich acknowledge Emergency Service Dispatchers and 9-1-1 Awareness Week, April 12 to 18. This week is an important way to acknowledge those who perform the role of “first, first responders”.

“Recognizing the silent and diligent work of Emergency Service Dispatchers is important because they play an integral role in supporting the public safety chain. They’re tasked with managing challenging situations, acting calmly under pressure and supporting the safety of the public and all first responders. They truly are the silent link that allows the rest of the chain to operate effectively,” says Fire Chief Michael Kaye.

Saanich Fire Dispatch supports 18 regional departments, providing service to over 200,000 residents in the region. “Our dispatchers are highly trained and ready to help. When you call, you can count on skilled staff to answer and support you,” says Kaye.

Saanich Fire Dispatch is offering the following 9-1-1 tips:

  • Emergencies only: 9-1-1 calls are prioritized and answered before any other line. Only call 9-1-1 if you have an emergency for fire, police or ambulance. Use responsibility.
  • Accidental 9-1-1 calls: we understand that this can happen. Stay on the line and do not hang up until the call taker says it is okay to do so. They may need to ask additional questions regarding the emergency.
