Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is proud to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 19 to 25, and recognize the hundreds of residents who generously give their time and talents to support District programs and services throughout the year.
From supporting emergency preparedness and community events to stewarding parks and strengthening neighbourhood safety, Saanich volunteers play a vital role in building a connected, resilient community.
“The dedication and enthusiasm volunteers bring to our community is truly inspiring,” said Mayor Dean Murdock. “Their selfless contributions empower our programs and enrich the fabric of our community. We are so grateful for their time, energy and efforts. We look forward to welcoming new volunteers who will continue to build on this legacy of service and community spirit.”
Saanich is fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers working across dozens of program areas, with many individuals contributing for years—and in some cases, decades. Their support helps the District deliver key services, expand community programming, and respond to local needs.
Volunteers make a difference across Saanich
Volunteering with the District offers opportunities to learn new skills, meet people, and contribute to meaningful work that benefits the community. District programs provide training and support so volunteers can build confidence and experience—whether they’re giving back for the first time or returning year after year.
Saanich Emergency Program (SEP)
SEP volunteers support critical emergency preparedness and response work, including emergency radio communications, Emergency Support Services, and the Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program.
“Every year, the volunteers that work with the Saanich Emergency Program, as well as those in other areas of Saanich, put an incredible amount of time and effort into supporting key activities and programs,” said Captain Erin Stockill, Emergency Program Officer. “The knowledge they share coupled with the commitment they show are a crucial component to the success of our programs and the success of Saanich.”
Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Volunteers in Parks, Recreation and Community Services contribute to community well-being by supporting the parks and programs residents use every day. They assist with environmental education and stewardship projects, community festivals, social spaces for seniors, arts and culture programming, and a wide range of recreation opportunities. Volunteers join for many reasons—from staying active and making social connections to building personal and professional skills, completing graduation hours, or simply giving back.

Saanich Police Department (SPD)
The Saanich Police Department volunteer program provides another important avenue for community involvement. With dozens of volunteers and hundreds of Block Watch members, SPD volunteers strengthen community safety through initiatives like the ACE mascot and participation in ICBC road safety campaigns, including Cell Watch and Speed Watch. Together, volunteers and SPD work to share crime prevention information and support safer neighbourhoods.
