When and where to ‘make a splash’ in Saanich!

Saanich, BC – With the May long weekend serving as the unofficial start of summer, it’s also the kickoff to splash pad season in Saanich!

The District will be turning on the taps at the Beckwith Park splash pad on Saturday, May 17th. This fun community amenity will be open from 10:00am-7:00pm through mid-October.

However, after experiencing operational issues last summer, the Rutledge Park splash pad will not be opening this long weekend to complete permanent changes to its water discharge system, ensuring appropriate discharge to the stormwater system.

Visitors will recall that in 2024, staff were made aware that trace chlorine amounts detected in the potable water from the splash pad entering the storm water system were higher than the provincial standard for aquatic life. Potable water contains chlorine to protect human health but is not healthy for aquatic life.

While a short-term solution was identified last season, staff continue to work with an engineering firm to complete the design for a permanent solution, with construction and installation work to follow. The District is aiming to open the splash pad in early July, pending necessary approvals. Saanich thanks visitors for their patience, and reminds everyone that the rest of Rutledge Park — including its modern playground, sport courts and walking paths — remains open for you to enjoy.

Please stay tuned to our Parks Notices page, our Parks, Recreation and Community Services Facebook page, and our District of Saanich Facebook page for the latest updates on both splash pads throughout the summer.
