Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is providing an update on the extended closure of the weight room at Gordon Head Recreation Centre (GHRC).

As previously shared, work began in late spring 2025 to address a persistent moisture problem between the ceiling and the roof over the weight room. As remediation and repair work progressed, it became clear through investigation that the roof assembly needed to be replaced, significantly expanding the original scope of work and timeline.

This new scope required an extensive and detailed design process to ensure engineering design requirements are met, and to take into account modern code requirements and seismic improvements. A complete roof replacement tender was issued and has since been awarded, with crews set to mobilize shortly. With the winter season setting in, a temporary enclosure is also being built to protect the building from inclement weather and allow for safe winter construction.

The extra time required for additional design work and contract tendering means that the weight room will not be reopening in December 2025 as previously targeted. The District of Saanich recognizes this will be disappointing news for patrons who were looking forward to returning to their routines at the GHRC weight room soon. Considerable efforts are underway to complete the remaining work as efficiently as possible, and another update will be provided in early 2026 as we look forward to reopening this highly valued community amenity.

In the meantime, Saanich’s three other weight rooms at Saanich Commonwealth Place and Cedar Hill and G.R. Pearkes recreation centres remain available for use. A reminder that the closure at GHRC affects the weight room only – programs that use the aquatic areas, auditorium, dance studio, multipurpose room, and fitness annex facilities are not affected.

The District thanks patrons for their continued patience throughout this complex project. Once completed, you will be welcomed back to a weight room that has not only undergone necessary structural improvements, but also aesthetic and functional updates that will enhance your workouts and enjoyment of this important community facility.
