Saanich, BC – Summer weather is here, and Saanich is encouraging all residents to prepare to beat the heat by following some simple tips.
Tips for beating the heat in Saanich this summer
Find a cool spot: Saanich parks, beaches, splash pads and recreation centres are excellent spots to beat the heat. If you’re heading outside make sure you stay in the shade, avoid direct sun mid-day, wear a hat and protective clothing, use sunscreen and wear UV-protective eye wear.
Identify a heat buddy: If you live alone, find an extreme heat buddy to check in on you when it gets hot, and who you can also reach out to for help. If you don't think you need a buddy, think about if there is someone in your life who could use one and give them a call to check-in.
Plan ahead: Plan outdoor activities for cooler times of the day like early morning or evening.
Support local: Local businesses (malls, retails spaces, etc.) also offer a break from the heat and would likely appreciate the support.
Wetter is better: Drink water regularly, even more than you think you need! Take cool showers and mist yourself and your clothing with cool water to keep you from overheating.
Keep your home cool: Avoid cooking indoors or doing laundry on the hottest days of the year or the hottest part of the day. To save energy and keep your home cool on laundry days, wash your clothes in cold water and let them line dry. Close windows blinds and shutters during the daytime and open them at night.
No air conditioning, no problem: If you don’t have air-conditioning, take shelter in the coolest room in your home and use a fan. Ice packs and cold drinks can also help!
Know the risk: Heat can have a serious effect on your physical health so it's important to look out for signs of heatstroke and heat exhaustion. Check on vulnerable neighbours and older adults multiple times a day, especially in the evening. If you are with someone who is confused, unconscious or has fainted and you think it is from the heat, call 9-1-1.
