Saanich, BC – About 400 new units of non-market housing are closer to becoming a reality, with help from the Saanich Affordable Housing Reserve Fund (SAHRF).

This week, Council approved four Pre-Development grants totaling $158,000 from the SAHRF, which provides financial assistance to support the development of non-profit affordable rental housing in the District.

The non-profit organizations receiving grants include:

  • Community Living Victoria
    • $40,000 for project at 3861 Cedar Hill Cross Road
      • Proposed net new units: 40-75
  • Capital Region Housing Corporation
    • $40,000 for project at 1827 McKenzie Avenue
      • Proposed net new units: 190
    • $40,000 for project at 898 Sevenoaks Road
      • Proposed net new units: 120
  • Greater Victoria Housing Society
    • $38,000 for project at 983 Sutcliffe Road
      • Proposed net new units: 30

“I’m proud of the steps Saanich is taking to get more truly affordable homes built in our community that give more people the chance to find a home that meets their needs and fits their budget,” says Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock. “Since January 2024, half of the new homes approved through Development Permits were non-market housing units, which is such a significant step toward greater affordability – and we’re always striving to do more. These grants are just one of the tools in our municipal toolkit to make it easier for non-profit organizations to build and operate affordable housing in Saanich.”

The District was recently recognized by the Planning Institute of BC (PIBC) for its efforts to accelerate the delivery of new non-market housing supply.
