Saanich, BC – The weight room at Gordon Head Recreation Centre (GHRC) will remain closed longer than expected, with reopening now targeted for December 2025.

Work got underway this past spring to address a persistent moisture problem between the ceiling and the roof over the weight room. As remediation and repair work progressed, it became clear through investigation that the roof assembly needs to be replaced, significantly expanding the original scope of work and timeline.

The closure affects the weight room only. Programs that use the auditorium, dance studio, multipurpose room, and fitness annex facilities are not affected. At present, no impacts to aquatic programs are anticipated.

Saanich Recreation recognizes the significant impact that the extended closure of this popular facility has on GHRC patrons, and staff are working to complete the remaining work as efficiently as possible so the facility can return to regular use.

During the extended closure
Staff at Gordon Head Recreation Centre are actively adapting programs to utilize other areas of the facility where possible. Beginning in September, some registered weight room-based programs will move to alternate spaces within the centre during the closure.

September also brings extended fall operating hours at Saanich Recreation Centres. Saanich Commonwealth Place, Cedar Hill Recreation Centre and G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre all have well-equipped weight rooms available for drop-in access. Facility hours and information can be found at saanich.ca/recreation.

As more visitors are welcomed at our three other Saanich weight rooms, these facilities may be busier than normal.

Further improvements planned
While structural and mechanical works at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre weight room are underway, staff are taking the opportunity to explore some aesthetic and functional updates to the weight room aimed at improving the overall experience for patrons when the weight room reopens. We look forward to welcoming visitors back this winter!
