For immediate release
Saanich, BC – Effective October 28, 2025, the District of Saanich is implementing a rate change for electric vehicle (EV) charging at our Saanich-owned public stations. The hourly rate will increase from $1.00 to $1.50 for all users.
Why is this happening?
This change was approved during the Saanich Council meeting on October 27 and is considered necessary to:
- Cover increased costs: Operational expenses, including maintenance, electricity, and network management, have risen since the rates were last set in 2021.
- Expand infrastructure: The revenue generated will support the expansion of Saanich’s EV charging network, with up to 30 new stations planned over the next few years, in collaboration with the Capital Regional District.
- Ensure sustainability: This aligns with our strategic plan objectives, focusing on reducing emissions and practicing sustainable asset management
What it means for Saanich residents:
- Affordable energy use: The increase ensures the service remains cost-effective while supporting a sustainable growth model.
- Network expansion: Revenue from the new rates will support expansion of Saanich’s public charging network by ensuring sufficient funding is available to cover operating costs of both new and existing chargers.
In alignment with the goals shared in our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, the District of Saanich is committed to enhancing infrastructure, fostering eco-friendly transportation choices and reducing emissions.
