Saanich, BC – Poetry, spoken word and the literary arts have the power to connect, inspire and reflect the spirit of our community – and that’s why the District of Saanich is looking for its first-ever Community Poet and Youth Community Poet!
Applicants will be passionate about developing creative ways to make poetry part of public life in Saanich and interested in collaborating on projects, performances, and other opportunities. The successful Community Poet will serve a 2-year term and the Youth Community Poet will serve a 1 to 2-year term.
“This is a positive way for the District to engage our local talent and encourage more poetry in community life,” says Councillor Mena Westhaver, Chair of Saanich’s Arts, Culture & Community Wellbeing Advisory Committee. “I look forward to seeing how the voices leading poetry in Saanich will invite reflection, inspire creativity and deepen our sense of community through their work.”
The District is grateful for the Greater Victoria Public Library’s support in promoting this initiative.
“Poetry brings communities together and sparks imagination,” said Maureen Sawa, CEO, Greater Victoria Public Library. “We’re excited to help highlight the District of Saanich’s new Community Poet and Youth Community Poet program.”
The deadline to apply is October 31, 2025, and applicants will be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift card to Bolen Books.
The District of Saanich celebrates diversity and encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply, as this program aims to reflect the rich perspectives and experiences of all Saanich residents.
