Periodic closure of Cordova Bay Road on February 25 and 26, 2023

February 17, 2023

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich will be undertaking planned work on Cordova Bay Road in PKOLS (Mt Doug Park) from February 23 to 26, 2023. During this time the District’s contractor will have people and equipment on the road shoulder near the north boundary of the park. On February 25 and 26, there will be periodic road closures of up to 30 minutes during daylight hours.

During the time of the periodic road closures, Cordova Bay Road will be closed from Ash Road to Blenkinsop Road. Local traffic only will be allowed from Blenkinsop Road to the north boundary of the park, and from Ash Road and Cedar Hill Road to the park parking lot. BC Transit buses will run as normal with possible slight delays.

The periodic road closures are necessary so that the District’s contractor can obtain subsurface information to determine the depth to bedrock along the crest of the bank near the road. The method used to gather the information is sensitive to noise and therefore requires intermittent traffic closures of up to 30 minutes.

History

The District of Saanich has been aware of slope stability issues along Cordova Bay Road in PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park) since the 1970s. Because of the sensitive nature of the park and its cultural significance, Saanich staff continue to monitor the slope regression and determine short-term remediation work to stabilize the road edge. After this present monitoring phase, the Engineering Department anticipates providing information on how to proceed in 2024.
