More e-bike incentives available to Saanich residents

Saanich, BC – Following the massive success of Saanich’s e-bike incentive pilot program in 2021-22, we are excited to announce a new round of grants will be available through the province this summer.

Starting June 1, Saanich residents interested in purchasing an e-bike at a reduced cost can apply for a grant from the province as part its new e-bike incentive program.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of this program is encouraged to apply as soon as possible once registration opens, as part of a “first come first served” program that is expected to fill up quickly.

“When Saanich launched its e-bike incentive pilot program in 2021 we hoped that it would be taken up at a wider scale. This new provincial program demonstrates the value of Saanich’s climate leadership. We are pleased to contribute funds to help more Saanich residents access incentives. That means more people in Saanich can get around on bike and fewer people commuting by car,” said Mayor Dean Murdock.

Saanich is providing $30,000 in top-up funding to the provincial program (for Saanich residents on a first come, first served basis).

Provincial e-bike incentives are available to all residents of British Columbia over 18 years of age. Rebate amounts are based on household income to encourage more people who need access to affordable transportation to take advantage. The program is administered by Scrap-IT although there is no requirement to scrap a vehicle to take part.

"Provincewide incentives to purchase e-bikes will mean more people will have access to this clean and affordable mode of transportation. Saanich’s top-up to this rebate program will encourage even more residents to leave their car at home and support our collective effort toward a net-zero future for all British Columbians," said B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming.

E-bikes are a climate-friendly and accessible way of getting around the community, and they reduce transportation costs.
