Saanich hires new Economic Development Manager

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich recently hired Mitchell Edgar as its new economic development manager. This new role will manage Saanich’s economic development programs and activities that expand, retain and attract businesses in the community.

“We made economic development and diversification a priority for the community, and it is a key piece of Council’s vision of a sustainable Saanich. We are thrilled Mitchell joined us to help with this critical work,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “This work will strengthen the economic base and contribute to improving community quality of life and sustainable prosperity for Saanich. Mitchell’s strengths in the areas of opportunity identification and development, investment attraction, strategic planning, project management, community engagement and partnership building, and evaluation of complex issues will be valuable to our community.”

Edgar brings more than 20 years of experience to the role and has worked across the province leading a variety of projects and teams, from developing and implementing strategic plans for local and regional governments to providing solutions to small and medium sized businesses and non-profit organizations’ marketing and business development challenges. He has worked as a consultant and has economic development management experience with municipalities, including the City of New Westminster and the District of Squamish. He holds a Master of Economic Development from the University of Waterloo.

As the largest municipality on Vancouver Island, Edgar sees a broad range of opportunities for business and investment in Saanich.

“It’s exciting to take on the new role of economic development manager for Saanich,” said Edgar. “Economic development is an important piece of the overall health and sustainability of this community. I look forward to helping existing businesses expand, and attracting new businesses and investment, and supporting emerging sectors and innovation. Economic development is at the core of community well-being and quality of life.”

More information will become available at saanich.ca as Edgar works on the creation of an economic development strategy for the District.
