Saanich Emergency Program recognizes their amazing volunteers during National Volunteer Week!

Saanich, BC –The Saanich Emergency Program (SEP) celebrates National Volunteer Week from April 18 to 24, recognizing the dedication and commitment of its volunteers. Many volunteers have served with the SEP for several years, with some serving for decades!

“We are so grateful for our volunteers,” said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Macdonald. “Their dedication, knowledge and desire to make a positive difference in their community make our municipality stronger and more resilient. Their steadfast commitment during this past year, despite its many challenges, has been an inspiration.”

Benefits to volunteering

There are many benefits to volunteering with the Saanich Emergency Program. Our volunteers consistently mention having a stronger sense of connection with their community.  As a volunteer you will learn about and enhance your personal preparedness and learn how to support others during an emergency or disaster. You may have skills well suited to the program or you may be looking to try something completely new.

Do you love to coordinate, help those in need, and be connected with neighbours? There are lots of exciting positions available in Emergency Radio Communications, the Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program and with Emergency Support Services.

Quick facts

• SEP helps the community to prepare for, respond to and recover from major emergencies and disasters.
• When a Saanich resident is evacuated from their home and requires support, volunteers are there to help. These events can be as small as a house fire or as large as a community evacuation. SEP has volunteers on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.
• During the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers adapted to deliver emergency preparedness workshops virtually. In only the past six months these presentations have supported hundreds of residents to become more prepared. The next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27, 7 p.m.
