Saanich COVID-19 update: temporary closure of Saanich playgrounds and structures

Saanich, BC – Effective immediately, the District of Saanich is closing all public playgrounds to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

All parks will remain open at this time, but Saanich strongly recommends that the public follow appropriate protocols outlined by the Provincial Health Officer, including:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Follow coughing and sneezing guidelines
  • Follow social distancing guidelines

The decision to temporarily close Saanich’s playgrounds was made out of an abundance of caution, in response to public concerns that some playground users are not practicing social distancing as directed by B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer. The temporary closure affects only playgrounds that are in Saanich parks or at Saanich recreation facilities.

Families are encouraged to enjoy the parks and trails throughout the community, while avoiding groups and maintaining a safe social distance.

What is social distancing?

Social distancing is a way that we can slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting close contact with others. Even if you are not sick, it’s still important to maintain about two meters (six feet) or the length of a queen-sized bed from one another when we can when outside our homes.

There are many ways to practice social distancing:

  • Limit activities outside your home
  • Use virtual options to connect with others
  • If you are out in public, try to keep two metres between yourself and others
  • ‎Keep your hands at your side or in your pockets when possible
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cough into your elbow or sleeve instead of your hands
  • Avoid social activities in large gatherings of more than 50 people

Parents are also urged to reinforce the importance of social distancing with their children.

What recreation options are still available?

  • All of Saanich’s parks and the Cedar Hill Golf Course will remain open until otherwise notified.
  • Fields, trails and open spaces will remain available to the public.

What is Saanich doing to ensure hygiene and safety?

  • All equipment at Saanich parks and playgrounds will continue to be checked on a monthly basis to ensure safety.
  • Public washrooms will remain open at this time. Deep-cleaning protocols have been implemented for the facilities.
  • Select porta-potties have been removed temporarily.
