Prospect Lake Road safety review paves way for staged improvements

Saanich, BC – After receiving feedback from the community about the safety on Prospect Lake Road, results of a road safety review show that staged improvements will help to make the road safer for all users.

“We heard the concerns from the community relating to safety on their roads and proactively did a careful review of the area to see if improvements could be made,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “The review showed that some staged improvements will make this rural road a lot safer, and we would like to thank the community and all involved for their valuable feedback. While we all still need to do our part to use rural roads safely, implementing these recommendations will provide a marked improvement for this busy area.”

Review results

A combination of short, medium and long-term recommendations have been made.

In the short term, (within the next year) Saanich will:

  • improve existing signage and pavement markings, and install new signs where needed
  • install a speed reduction zone (30 km/h) from Estelline Rd. to Goward Rd.
  • install a centerline rumble strip near Munn Rd.
  • narrow the road to one-way at Calvert Pond, increasing safety and slowing traffic

In the medium term, (next five years) Saanich will:

  • improve sight lines by cutting back shrubs and/or trees
  • install improved reflective markings
  • extend the centerline rumble strip beyond Munn Rd.

In the long term, (next five years plus) Saanich will:

  • improve the intersection geometry at Prospect Lake Rd. and Munn Rd.
  • improve some areas of Prospect Lake Road’s geometry (ie. installation of a shoulder, widening)
  • install traffic calming measures
  • improve the intersection at Prospect Lake Rd. / West Burnside Rd.

Quick facts

  • The intent of this road safety review was to assess the existing roadway conditions, traffic volumes, collision history, geometrics, human factors, observations and traffic conflicts.
  • A third-party contractor helped us to complete this work and will make recommendations on appropriate next steps to improve the road.
  • The safety review was based on the Canadian Guide to In-Service Road Safety Reviews, developed by Transportation Association of Canada.
