Saanich officially takes ownership of land at Kings Rd. and Richmond Ave.

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich has now taken official ownership of the land near the intersection of Kings Road and Richmond Avenue.

“Council heard from residents that this property is a crucial part of their community,” said Acting Mayor Karen Harper. “We are thrilled to be able to respond to these needs. Work is now underway to develop a fundraising process to cover a portion of the purchase cost, in order to remain fiscally responsible.”

Saanich purchased the large, unique piece of land from BC Hydro for $5.5 million in an effort to respond to the needs of the community and capitalize on future opportunities.

A Mayor’s Standing Committee has been created with terms of reference that include: developing and implementing a fundraising action plan and communications strategy; coordinating fundraising efforts with other community groups and stakeholders; and, providing recommendations to Council on financial contributions from other local governments. The committee is made up of three interested community members and three members of Council who will work together to coordinate and advance fundraising efforts.

More information about how to make a contribution toward the purchase of the land will be provided in the coming months.

Quick facts:

  • The parcel of land is 2.23 hectares and consists of three addresses: 1843 and 1845 Kings Roads and 2661 Richmond Road.
  • The site is undeveloped, with the exception of one uninhabited single-family dwelling, and is covered with grass, trees and shrubs.
  • Bowker Creek runs along the southwest boundary of the site.
  • BC Hydro has owned the property since 1958 and recently determined it is surplus to its needs.
  • As part of its disposition process, BC Hydro first offered the land to the provincial government, crown agencies and local First Nations.
  • If Council is unable to raise funds to offset the incurred debt, Saanich intends to dispose of a portion of the property to recuperate some of the cost.
  • Mayor’s Standing Committee members include: Mayor Fred Haynes, Councilor Nathalie Chambers, Councillor Colin Plant, Mr. Paul McKivett, Ms. Rebecca Sterritt, Dr. Julian Lum
