Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich will be one step closer to providing an enhanced cycling network when construction of new bike lanes along Lansdowne Road kicks off next week.

The new bike lanes will improve access to the area and provide cyclists with a connection to UVic, Camosun College, Lansdowne Middle School, Hillside Mall, Jubilee Hospital and the local neighbourhood.

“Creating a safe, interconnected and accessible cycling network is a priority for Saanich,” said Harley Machielse, Director of Engineering. “This project brings us one step closer to achieving our vision of reducing automobile dependency and increasing walking, cycling, and transit use.”

Cycling Improvements:

  • Multi-use trail in front of Camosun College
  • Cycle track in front of Lansdowne Middle School, and bike lanes for the remaining sections
  • Upgrades to the Richmond Avenue and Lansdowne Road intersection, which will increase safety and access for pedestrians
  • Enhanced sidewalks along Lansdowne to create a boulevard with new trees
  • New bus shelters and improved pedestrian waiting areas at high-use bus stops along the corridor

On July 20, Saanich received a $450,000 BikeBC grant from the Government of British Columbia to help fund the project. Saanich will match the amount provided by the Province to fund the remainder of the project.

This project is being completed in collaboration with Camosun College, Lansdowne Middle School, and the City of Victoria. The project is expected to be complete by fall 2016.

Quick Facts:

  • Four lanes of traffic will be maintained after construction of the new bike lanes is complete.
  • Saanich invests over $2 million per year on cycling improvements.
  • BikeBC is the Government of B.C.’s cost-sharing program that helps communities build cycling projects that attract and support commuter and tourism cyclists.
