Fire Station #2 Redevelopment
Public Art Project

The District of Saanich is undertaking the redevelopment of Fire Station #2 in Royal Oak. This major capital project replaces the existing building on an enlarged site, expanding the size and capacity of the station within a new landmark public safety facility. It is expected to be completed in 2026.

A key component of the project is the commission and integration of public art through Saanich’s Civic Public Art Program, as outlined within the Comprehensive Public Art Policy. The public art project will be chosen through a public jury (selection panel), to ensure a fair process and that the artwork selected meets the established criteria and standards. The jury will include:

  • Three local artists.
  • Local neighbourhood association representative.
  • Department staff member.

Call for Project Jury Members

We are seeking applications from 3 artists (practicing artists or art professionals) to participate on the project jury that will be responsible for evaluating proposals and making recommendations on the selection of public art. The jury brings community involvement, professionalism and transparency to the selection of artworks for public spaces.

Jury members should be capable of providing critical analysis of artist qualifications as well as evaluating the merits and suitability of proposals under review. Saanich is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from people of varied ages, backgrounds, identities and abilities.

Jury members will participate in an orientation as well as a minimum of two meetings within the process – anticipated to take place in June, Summer, and Fall of 2024. They will receive information packages ahead of meetings and be required to review them in order to come prepared to provide input and participate in discussions. Jury members must be able to attend all meetings. An honorarium will be offered to artist members of the project jury.

Applications will be accepted until May 21, 2024.
