Saanich, BC – A comprehensive draft plan for the future of the District of Saanich’s major municipal facilities is available for the public to review. The Strategic Facilities Master Plan makes a direct connection with how Saanich’s facilities support service delivery.

The plan's evaluation criteria of condition, capacity and risk identifies priorities for future capital investment. The plan provides a framework that will guide all future work to ensure service delivery is maintained and improved over the next 20 years.

In May 2017, Saanich embarked on a public education campaign to inform the public about the role of the district’s facilities in the delivery of services and programs. The results of that public engagement are included within the draft plan. The next phase of public participation is receiving input to inform and strengthen the identification of priorities and the processes to undertake the work outlined in the plan.

“Municipal buildings designed and built decades ago don’t necessarily meet today’s needs,” said Chief Administrative Officer Paul Thorkelsson. “This framework will help us make decisions about the future of our facilities to continue supporting the health, safety and well-being of our community. We’re keen to hear the public’s feedback on how we plan to prioritize and invest in our facilities.”

Quick facts
  • The majority of services Saanich provides are largely delivered through 10 facilities.
  • The Parks and Public Works Yard is the first priority project for facility maintenance and repair.
  • The framework structure of the plan allows and anticipates opportunities as they arise.
  • The final version of the Strategic Facilities Master Plan will be presented to Council in early 2018.
