Saanich, BC – As part of its commitment to improving housing supply and affordability, the District of Saanich welcomes the housing targets announced by the Province but notes a collaborative, coordinated approach will be needed to turn those targets into occupied homes.

“Saanich is wholeheartedly committed to working together on housing solutions. We will create more homes for more people, more quickly,” says Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock. “We cannot underestimate the challenge ahead. Tripling the volume of permits over five years will challenge us as an organization. Success will require resource support from the Province to create new homes for Saanich residents.”

The District has already undertaken a number of positive actions outlined in its 10-year Housing Strategy. Saanich is exploring affordable housing opportunities on municipally-owned lands, as well as planning for infill housing through the Neighbourhood Homes Study and intensification on major corridors through the Quadra Mackenzie Study. Changes are also coming to the development process, with the goal of making it faster.

“Working together, we can build upon the positive actions already underway in our housing strategy,” says Murdock. “We value our relationship with the Province, and look forward to continuing to work together to create more homes that meet the diverse housing needs of Saanich residents.”
