Heritage Designation

There are different levels of protection available to preserve the heritage value of significant buildings in Saanich. Heritage Designated properties contain a higher level of protection than properties that are listed solely on Saanich's Heritage Register. A heritage-designated property is protected by a Municipal Heritage Designation Bylaw through Council approval.

Heritage Designated properties may not be altered or demolished without obtaining a Heritage Alteration Permit. Typically, Heritage Designation only applies to the exterior structure, though interior or landscape features can be included. Owners are highly encouraged to consult with Saanich staff prior to conducting any design changes.

Incentives for Heritage Preservation

If you own a Heritage Designated building, you may be eligible for a restoration grant awarded though the Saanich Heritage Foundation.

Note: Several of the District’s planning and development application fees have been updated to reflect current processing costs and to support timely, high-quality service delivery.

Application fees shall increase by 3% annually for five years, rounded down to the nearest $5.00, commencing on January 1, 2027, with the final increase occurring on January 1, 2031.
