Celebrate Family Day safely and creatively within your “family bubble” this year! While we cannot come together for our regular one-day Family Arts Festival at the Cedar Hill Recreation and Arts Centre this year, there are plenty of ways you can be creative and celebrate community.

Join us for some (or all) of the following fun activities to celebrate Family Day! Share your creative adventures online and you could win a prize!

Lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Dancers
The Lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Dancers of the the Songhees Nation started Family Arts Festival off in a good way with a special performance of three songs. Broadcast of this performance is now complete. We are grateful to  The Lək̓ʷəŋən Dancers for sharing their cultural performance with the community over the month.  

Chinese Dance Victoria Performance
Celebrate the Lunar New Year (February 12) by enjoying these two colourful dance performances! Perfomance video

ISSAMBA BITES: Special Concert with LASSO in Celebration of Black History Month 
We are grateful to share a performance hosted by The African Arts & Cultural Society - ISSAMBA Centre with multi-instrumentalist artist, Lasso. He has been playing balafon, doum-doum, tam-tam, bara, djembe and African flute from a very young age. Performance video

Shan-e-Punjab Dancers
Shan-e-Punjab (S.E.P.) is a youth organization, which teaches cultural dances from various regions of India, primarily focusing on Bhangra and Giddha which are two traditional dances from Punjab.  The group has been performing at the Family Arts Festival since 2016. Performance video

Hands-on activities at home

Get hands-on together at home with some art activities! Some projects will invite you to contribute what you make to inspiring community art projects and displays. Most of these activities (except the Clay Hearts project) you can create with supplies you have at home or can find affordably.

Supply kits: A limited number  of supply kits are still available for families that may have difficulty accessing supplies. Sign up at the links provided if you need a supply kit. Pickup of supply kits will take place physically-distanced outside the Cedar Hill Recreation and Arts Centre, North side (outside the Multipurpose Room exterior doors) on Wed. Feb. 17 will be available from 10am-12pm and 1-3pm outside Art Studio 1 at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre. Also on Sat. and Sun. Feb 20 and 21st on the exterior of the building outside Multipurpose Room.

Outdoor arts adventures

Get outdoors together, and be a part of some creative activities and projects in nature! Some activities ask you to go online first to learn more and prepare to take materials with you for your visit. Some activities will inspire you to participate in a hands-on art activity at home fun after your visit!

Saanich Parks Awesome Art Adventure! 
Be inspired by nature this Family Day! Take an adventure in your favorite Saanich Park with our new field guide and discover the plants and animals that call it home. Then from the comfort of your own home, create an awesome artwork of your experience and share with us!  

Word Art in the Park
Head outside to explore McMinn, Doris Page, Doumac and Lochside Parks from their entrances off the Lochside Trail while searching for Word Art letters that combine to create a secret phrase. Submit the phrase to us when you solve it and you will be entered into a draw to win an exciting prize! Artful letters created by Lochside School students. Project in partnership with Saanich Peninsula Literacy.

Sense of Belonging: A Creative Mindfulness Walk in Nature with Artist and Art Therapist Kaitlin McManus

You are invited to take a mindful walk along Gorge Waterway Park! Experience seven mindful art interventions along the waterway path between Adelaide Ave. and Dysart Rd. Each art piece corresponds with an audio recorded mindfulness prompt accessed below. You will be invited to add to a collaborative, and physically distanced, community art piece at the end of the walk!

Note: Please bring a writing utensil/or drawing material to contribute to the final art piece, and headphones for listening to audio prompts on your cell phone. 

The following audio recordings correspond with the artworks, and we encourage you to listen to them while viewing the art:

Challenge your Family with a Scavenger Hunt with The Greater Victoria Public Library! 
Have a fun, screen-free play with your family with a scavenger hunt in the comfort of your own home or neighborhood park! 

Explore Public Art in Saanich
If you are looking to get out and explore Saanich this weekend why not take in some of the Public Art installations in the community.  Get the family together for a bike ride or walk the parks and trails to find these works of art.
