COVID-19 update regarding bylaw enforcement

On March 26, the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General announced an order enabling bylaw enforcement officers to assist in the enforcement of Provincial Health Orders. Frequently asked questions related to Provincial Health Orders and enforcement of those Orders can be found on their website.

The District of Saanich has established a COVID-19 Enforcement Team to coordinate efforts in assisting with enforcement of Provincial Health Officer orders and to ensure compliance with District-issued closures of recreation facilities, activities and municipal services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To report a concern during business hours (8:30-4:30, Monday through Friday) relating to an order of the Provincial Health Officer or a municipal closure related to COVID-19, please call 250-475-5456 or fill out a Report a Problem form.

In addition to their core policing and public safety mandates, the Saanich Police Department (SPD) is responsible for the administration of parking complaints and parking enforcement for the Municipality of Saanich.

For the past 28 years, SPD’s parking enforcement has been provided by contracted service providers, one of whom held the position for over 26 years.  In January 2020, our most recent Parking Enforcement Officer retired.  The position has remained vacant since that time due to ongoing staffing challenges.  This ongoing vacancy has created a corresponding service delivery gap for our community, and an opportunity to revisit the parking complaints and enforcement model for the Municipality.
