Under the general direction of a Recreation Programmer, the Youth Leader will provide direct supervision to Program Assistants and participants in summer day camps.  Youth Leaders will be responsible for planning and supervising relevant activities in a variety of programs for youth.  This also involves ensuring the safety and well-being of participants and communicating and working cooperatively with participants, parents, coordinators and supervisors.  Summer day camps will include the following:

General Day Camps (Gordon Head Recreation Centre and Saanich Commonwealth Place): Enjoy developing and working within creative weekly themes like Masterchef, Superheroes, or Animal Planet just to name a few. Successful candidates will come with a large variety of games, sports, and crafts ideas. Creativity and ingenuity are key!  Activities such as swimming round out these fun, popular camps.

Aquatic Day Camps (Gordon Head Recreation Centre and Saanich Commonwealth Place):  Do you love the water and have experience with swimming and various water sports? Enjoy working with activities such as swimming lessons, fun swims, snorkeling, waterpolo, diving and kayaking? You will need a desire to help kids learn skills and have fun in the water. These camps also include a mix of sports, crafts, games.

Specialty Day Camps (various Saanich Parks and Recreation locations)                               such as Cooking, Sports, Art, Skateboarding, Dance / Gymnastics / Preschool / Red Cross Babysitting:  Do you have some specific experience and passion in any of these areas? Successful candidates will be able to share their experience through the teaching and instruction of the basics of these specialty areas.  Please describe your experience as it relates to the specific area(s) above.

Saanich Neighborhood Playground Program, SNPP (various outdoor Saanich Parks):  SNPP Staff are passionate about engaging children in an outdoor setting. Successful candidates will be highly energetic, have an abundant knowledge of camp games and songs and will demonstrate a hunger to connect children to the outdoors in creative and fun ways.

Outdoor / Wilderness / Adventure Camps, 9+yrs (various outdoor locations):  Do you have a love for the outdoors and engaging kids in the adventures of nature?  Do you have experience leading such groups? We are looking for adventurous, energetic individuals who enjoy the outdoors, rain or shine! Positivity, risk management and problem-solving skills are key. 

Teen Camps, 12-16yrs: Must have capacity to lead day, week and/or overnight camps.  Topics include; fashion, arts and crafts, strategy games and initiative tasks, nature appreciation, skateboarding, urban camping and permaculture.  You will need skills such as; outdoor pursuits, team-building, problem-solving, risk management, leadership and public relations.

*Leadership Development Program, 13-16yrs: Do you have a drive for growing leadership capacity in young people in our community? You will need skills directly facilitating youth in leadership training and team building. We are looking for energy, passion, knowledge and truthiness, able to demonstrate appropriate leadership qualities and inspire greatness in moldable young minds.  
(*up to 6 weeks of full time employment required)

Requirements include completion of Grade 10, three months experience in a recreation day-camp environment, satisfactory police information check, Emergency First-Aid and CPR Level C, and a valid BC Class 4 Driver’s Licence, as required.

The successful candidates will be required to work Monday to Friday with a possibility of evening and weekend work (hours/shifts are subject to change).
