The District of Saanich’s Support Services is seeking multiple Assistant Operations Workers to perform manual work requiring skills and abilities in a wide variety of road maintenance, construction and sign marking activities and will be responsible for assisting in lay-out, excavation and preparation of sub-grade for road construction and widening, curb/gutter, sidewalk and catch basin installation, landscaping and fine grading gravel road base for asphalt paving, road markings and electrical conduits.
The primary assignment of the Assistant Operations Worker is to assist with maintaining the overall road quality through the removal of graffiti, pothole patching, gravel shouldering, and assisting with signs and road-marking activities. The successful candidates will perform flagging duties and act as a signalman for truck drivers and equipment operators while directing traffic adjacent to work sites.
When not working as the Assistant Operations Worker the base position is a Casual Labourer as part of the Public Works call list. This means that the successful candidate may also be required to work as a Labourer for other sections, subject to qualifications of individuals and operational requirements. This organizational structure will be clarified further for any individuals who are selected for an interview.
Our ideal candidates for work as Assistant Operations Worker will have: Grade 12 or equivalent; six months experience in civil works related to road construction, maintenance and signs/markings; valid Traffic Control Certificate; Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification; valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement and sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina and coordination to permit performance of work.
As successful candidates may be required to work as a Labourer for other sections, experience/skill/certification and ability in the following areas would also be beneficial: pipefitting water work and/or wastewater; operating backhoe; working in riparian areas including restoration and spills containment; water meter reading.
The successful candidates will work various shifts between Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and must be able to work outside in all types of weather.
