Current Projects

2011 Storm Drain and Sanitary Sewer Lining

Approximately 1.8 km of wood stave storm drain mains and 1.7 km of asbestos cement sanitary sewer mains is currently being replaced by cast-in-place-pipe (CIPP) lining.  This is a trenchless construction method that involves using compressed air to “blow” and expand a resin filled felt liner into an existing aged pipe. Once the liner is fitted into the existing pipe, steam or hot water is introduced to “cook” the resin. The physical property of the liquid resin changes to a hard plastic once successfully “cooked”, forming a new pipe inside the old pipe.  The CIPP lining will take place in eleven project areas:

  1. Alpine Crescent
  2. Stockton Crescent
  3. Service/Frechette Streets
  4. Burns Avenue
  5. Nigel Avenue
  6. Midgard Avenue / Mortimer Street
  7. Scotia Street
  8. Bethune Avenue
  9. Cloverdale Avenue
  10. Boleskine Street
  11. Maplewood Road

The work is being undertaken by Michels Canada Co., who was awarded the tender for the project. Some small conventional open excavation work is necessary to provide access for the liners to be installed or to repair severely damaged sections of the existing pipe. Brunnell Construction Ltd. has been sub-contracted to Michels for the open excavation work.  The CIPP lining work is expected to continue until early spring 2012.

Admirals Road -- Sidewalks and Bikelanes

Road, sidewalk and bikelane construction on Admirals Road between Arundel Drive and Westing Road was completed in November 2011 and boulevard tree plantings were completed in December 2011.  Remaining works still to be completed include extending the raised median near Cowper Street and additional boulevard landscaping.  This work will be completed during April 2012.

Please refer to the attached plan for additional information.

Burnside Road -- Sidewalks and Bikelanes

Road, sidewalk and bikelane construction on Burnside Road between Grange Road and McKenzie Avenue is nearing completion.  Final asphalt paving will take place during April 2012 when weather conditions are more favourable.

Please refer to the attached plans for additional information.

Cedar Hill Road -- Hopesmore to Feltham

This project will see the installation of concrete curb and sidewalk, as well as bike lanes on Cedar Hill Road between Hopesmore Drive (the southerly intersection) and Feltham Road. Working in co-operation with the development at 4009 Cedar Hill Road, the curb, sidewalk and bike lanes will be extended to Feltham Road. The existing lane configuration will be revised to provide bike lanes on both sides of the street and the existing on street parking lane will be adjusted in places with on street parking bays on the east side of Cedar Hill Road included in the design.

Cedar Hill Road at Recreation Centre Driveway

This project involves the installation of a concrete pedestrian sidewalk on the north side of the recreation centre driveway.  This will facilitate a safer and easier access for pedestrians utilizing the recreation centre and its varied services and programs.

Cedar Hill Road -- Rowan to Church

This project will see a new concrete sidewalk on the east side of Cedar Hill Road between Rowan Street and 3633 Cedar Hill Road (south of Church Avenue).  Cedar Hill Road will be widened to accommodate an extension of the dedicated bike lanes at Church Avenue.  The features in this project include a separated cycle lane and sidewalk, road widening with a concrete curb and storm water management facilities.

Fowler Sayward Hunt Intersection

This intersection has come to the attention of staff due to some unique features associated with it. These include:

  • the 90 degree bend;
  • the slight grade around the curve;
  • the split nature of Hunt Road at both ends of the curve and the affect that has on the banking of the roadway around the curve (super-elevation), especially for north bound vehicles.

Anecdotal and accident information suggests a higher risk of accident when traversing intersection/curve, especially in poor weather conditions when visibility and/or road conditions allow no buffer for correction.

The project will realign the intersection to a conventional "Tee" configuration. The Hunt Road leg will be regarded to provide safe access to and from Fowler and Sayward Roads with improved pedestrian access to the Lochside Trail.

The project also includes concrete sidewalks and bike lanes on the approaches to the intersection and improvements to the south bound bus stop on the west side of Fowler Road, which is consistent with community and Council’s desire to enhance alternate modes of transportation.

Concurrent to this work, the Parks Department is planning the construction of a gravel parking lot at the south end of Fowler Park to handle the overflow from Lochside Park during high park use events. Engineering and Parks will be working together to ensure the respective designs and subsequent construction is co-ordinated and compatible.
