Saanich Parks Overview
Park's News
MT VIEW PARK IS NOW OPEN!
The playground, trails, social hub, earth works, irrigation and hydro-seeding are complete. Trees will be planted in the coming weeks, and a community-maintained garden in the hub will take shape in the spring. The community can enjoy the playground, trails and hub throughout the winter, and we have put in temporary fencing to protect the soil and grass seed till spring. We hope the community enjoys the new amenities, and share the anticipation for warmer weather that will turn our new park green! Check it out.
ROLSTON TRAIL
In partnership with the Broadmead Area Residents’ Association (BARA), Saanich Parks is launching a pilot project on the Rolston Trail that will designate the trail as pedestrian only. This is effective immediately upon installation of appropriate signage and will run until the end of June 2012.
Currently, the section of Rolston Trail through Rithet’s Bog Conservation area is pedestrian only; the pilot project will extend this designation from Shadywood Drive, through Emily Carr Park to Emily Carr Drive and through Pondwood Park from Emily Carr Drive to Royal Oak Drive.
At the conclusion of the pilot project, Saanich staff, together with the Broadmead Area Residents Association will assess any feedback received as a result of the pilot and determine if the trail will remain pedestrian only.
Cyclists are encouraged to look for the Centennial Trails signs and follow the Royal Oak Trail marked routes following local residential streets.
The online survey is now available for you to provide comments or leave feedback regarding the pilot project. We will evaluate the survey results prior to making a recommendation on a permanent designation for the trail.

SAANICH RECEIVES 2011 FIREFLY AWARD
Recently the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Victoria Centre (RASC) recognized the District of Saanich and the Prospect Lake Soccer Club (PLSC) for the Layritz Park Artificial Turf Soccer Field Lights. The Firefly Award recognizes Excellence in Environmental Responsible Exterior Lighting and Light Pollution Abatement.
Mark Bohlman, representing RASC presented the award to Mayor Leonard and Rae Roer, Parks Manager. Mr. Bohlam complimented the lighting design system that reduces light pollution while aiming the light right where it belongs on the sport field. Members of the RASC have visited the site and were amazed at how effective the system is. They are pleased that this will be our new standard in lighting design.

The Layritz Park soccer lights are consistent with the Saanich Parks Lighting Guidelines. We are proud to have received this award. We also wish to recognize the PLSC for whole embracing the guidelines during the construction of this project.
